Interpreting the optical data of the Hubble Deep Field South: colors, morphological number counts and photometric redshifts

چکیده

We present an analysis of the optical data of the Hubble Deep Field South. We derive F300WAB, F450WAB, F606WAB and F814WAB number counts for galaxies in our catalogue (Volonteri et al. 2000): the number-counts relation has an increasing slope up to the limits of the survey in all four bands. The slope is steeper at shortest wavelengths: we estimated γF300WAB ∼ 0.47± 0.05, γF450WAB ∼ 0.35 ± 0.02, γF606WAB ∼ 0.28 ± 0.01 and γF814WAB ∼ 0.28 ± 0.01. The color-magnitude relations of galaxies shows an initial blueing trend, which gets flat in the faintest magnitude bin and the sample contains a high fraction of galaxies bluer than local sources, with about 50% of sources with F814WAB > 27 having (F450W-F606W)AB bluer than a typical local irregular galaxy. Morphological number counts are actually dominated by late type galaxies, while early type galaxies show a decreasing slope at faint magnitudes. Combining this information with photometric redshifts, we notice that galaxies contributing with a steep slope to the number counts have z & 1, suggesting a moderate merging. However we emphasize that any cut in apparent magnitude at optical wavelengths results in samples biased against elliptical galaxies, affecting as a consequence the redshift distributions and the implications on the evolution of galaxies along the Hubble sequence.

Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South Region IV: Optical Properties of the Faint Radio Population

The Australia Telescope Hubble Deep Field-South (ATHDFS) survey of the Hubble Deep Field South reaches sensitivities of ∼ 10 μJy at 1.4, 2.5, 5.2 and 8.7 GHz, making the ATHDFS one of the deepest surveys ever performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Here we present the optical identifications of the ATHDFS radio sources using data from the literature. We find that ∼66% of the radio...

Morphological Number Counts of Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South

We present a study of photometric properties of the galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) based on the released WFPC2 images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We have classified about 340 galaxies with I < 26 mag in the HDFS as well as about 400 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDFN) using the visual classification supplemented by inspection of the surface brightn...

Photometric Redshifts Applied to WFPC 2 and NICMOS HDF Data

A photometric redshift analysis of optical and infrared images of the Northern Hubble Deep Field indicate a constant star formation rate for redshifts between 1 and 6. The small size of the field and small number of high redshift objects limits this finding to just the area of the NICMOS image. The photometric redshift technique is a modified version of chi square fits to observed and calculate...

Serendipitously Detected Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field1

We present a catalog of 74 galaxies detected serendipitously during a campaign of spectroscopic observations of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF) and its environs. Among the identiÐed objects are Ðve candidate Lya emitters at a galaxy cluster at z\ 0.85, and a Chandra source with a heretofore z Z 5, undetermined redshift of z\ 2.011. We report redshifts for 25 galaxies in the central HDF, 13 of...
